Fuhu, Inc.
Fuhu was a company that made the Nabi series of tablets. Fuhu was founded in 2008 by Robb Fujioka and brothers Jim and Steve Hui. The company name was formed by taking the first two letters of the co-founders' last names. Jim Hui previous co-founded computer manufacturer eMachines, and his friends in the hardware business supplied the $1.5 million in seed money for Fuhu's startup.
Due to increasing competition from Apple, Samsung, and Amazon, who offered tablets and related software designed for children, along with similar devices from the children's television network Sprout and LeapFrog's Epic, demand for the line slowed and some of their devices, namely the Dream Tab and Big Tab, were poorly received. This led to Fuhu's bankruptcy and subsequent acquisition by toy giant Mattel, who bought the rights to the brand and went on to produce the Nabi SE. The Nabi line was discontinued not long after, leading to its online services shuttered as well.
